Microsoft, founded in 1975 and based in Redmond, Washington, develops its own AI models in the Microsoft AI division, led by its CEO Mustafa Suleyman. Microsoft AI describes its aim as building the most capable AI systems with humanity at the centre of every decision, an approach it calls humanist superintelligence.
Its models carry the MAI name. Microsoft AI lists MAI-Image-2.6 for images, MAI-Voice-2.1 for speech, MAI-Transcribe-2 for transcription, MAI-Thinking-1 for complex problems and MAI-Code-1.1-Flash, which is built into GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code. Microsoft also publishes Phi, a family of small language models.
Microsoft Copilot is the company's AI assistant across Windows, Microsoft 365 and the web. GitHub, a Microsoft company, offers GitHub Copilot, an AI pair programmer and coding agent. Microsoft Designer creates images and designs from prompts, while Azure Machine Learning and Custom Vision serve companies that train and deploy their own models.
